Next Play

The group had a week to read through two plays, then got together to read sections of the plays under consideration for our next production. Both of the plays were comedies and very different in nature, the choice was a difficult one and when it came to the members voting it was apparent several people had difficulty choosing which to go for and in the end the voting was very even, at one point it looked as if the decision might rest on the chairmans casting vote. However, one play forged ahead from the other and is our choice for the September production. The play chosen is "The Darling Buds of May" by H.E. Bates. It is going to be a large cast, 16 including children. More details about the play are shown below. The set is going to be a challenge as well as we will have indoor and outdoor scenes, it promises to be an exciting production to stage and will be directed by Janet Clark.

Auditions for the play were held Wednesday 10th March, many of the regulars got parts but as with recent productions we will be introducing some new people to the cast including youngsters making their debut on the stage. We are taking a few weeks off to learn lines and study parts then start rehearsals after Easter. We are very much looking forward to staging the play, write ups we found on the internet for other groups were very positive and the play has been very popular with audiences. The T.V. series is being re-run at the moment.

The Darling Buds of May

The lovable, irrepressible Larkin family who live in Kent made their debut in the novel The Darling Buds of May in 1957 and went on to further delight and beguile audiences both on stage and screen. Pop, who makes a fortune from a variety of deals but has never paid income tax, lives in rural idyllic bliss with generous hearted Ma and their six children. When a earnest tax official, Mr Charlton turns up one hot May afternoon in 1957 to investigate, he is bewitched immediately by eldest daughter Mariette and it isn't long before he succumbs to the boisterous Larkin family charm and largesse. This version of the story was first performed in 1995 and originally starred Christopher Timothy and Gemma Craven.
